The zoo has over 2,000 animals to view and one of the most beautiful botanical gardens in the country. Since its opening in 1974, the Riverbanks Zoo & Garden has provided the community with a wonderful place to learn about nature and wildlife. During its history, the zoo has earned a national reputation as one of the best zoos in the United States.

Guests can also explore nature in the 70-acre Riverbanks Botanical Garden. This beautiful location has sculptures and an interactive children's garden called Waterfall Junction. The area features a life-size T-Rex replica, giant tree houses, and kid-size playhouses. It is also home to a 25-foot cascading waterfall. Families can enjoy the natural beauty and enjoy a cool beverage at The Oasis concession stand.

Visitors can see over 2,000 animals from around the world in the Riverbanks Zoo and Garden. The zoo also boasts one of the nation's best botanical gardens and is open year-round except Thanksgiving and Christmas days. Admission to the Garden and Zoo is included in the price of admission. The zoo is smoke-free and no professional photography or drones are allowed.

The Riverbanks Zoo is operated by the Rich-Lex Riverbanks Park Special Purpose District, a partnership between the city of Columbia and Richland and Lexington counties. It opened on April 25, 1974 after five years of planning. Though the zoo was not self-supporting at first, the Riverbanks Zoological Society was formed to raise funds for the institution. As of today, the Columbia-area zoo is one of the largest nonprofit zoo societies in the United States per capita.
